Tragedy in Paris as the city’s Notre Dame cathedral goes up in flames, while Assange is arrested in the UK, and Sánchez wins the general election

On April 15, fire devastated the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the most visited landmark in the French capital. The cathedral’s iconic spire fell during the hours it took to battle the blaze. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Assange took refuge there in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault case that has since been dropped. The UK must now decide whether to extradite Assange to the US, where he faces charges of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. EFE. -
On April 24, the whole of Catalonia paid tribute to the country’s patron saint, Sant Jordi, in one of the most unique celebrations of the year. Stalls with roses and books filled the streets everywhere, and couples exchanged books and roses in what is arguably Catalnia’s most romantic annual celebration. QUIM PUIG. -
Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist party wins the April 28 general election, with 123 seats in the Spanish parliament, but short of the 176 seats needed for a majority, forcing the party to seek alliances in order to form a government. The Catalan pro-independence parties gained an unprecedented 22 seats. ORIOL DURAN.

Women, literature, and Sant Jordi
April 23 is one of Catalonia’s most important annual festivals: Sant Jordi’s Day. We celebrated the event with a focus on the issue of women and books, and interviewed Internet founding father Vinton Cerf during his trip here to pick up an award.
