Uber and Cabify quit Barcelona, the Catalan government creates 5,000 new teaching jobs, and a blanket of snow covers inland parts of Catalonia

An agreement between Barcelona’s taxi drivers, the Catalan government and the city council handed victory to the taxi drivers in the bitter dispute with rideshare firms over licencing issues. Uber and Cabify decided to throw in the towel and announced their departure from the Catalan capital. JOSEP LOSADA. -
The Catalan governments’ education department created some 5,005 new posts for teachers of secondary education and vocational training. The authorities also announced new changes to the model of assessment in order to prioritise competences over memorisation. LLUIS SERRAT. -
The first great snowfall of the year saw the pre-Pyrenees and Catalan lowlands completely covered in white, with the snow reaching depths of up to one metre in some places. Although schools were not forced to close, timetables were hit and many schoolchildren were sent home early ACN. -
The UK’s Conservative prime minister, Theresa May, lost a key debate in parliament on her proposed Brexit agreement by 230 votes. MPs rejected the deal reached after two years of negotiations with Brussels, leaving the issue of Britain’s exit from the European Union unresolved. May was later forced to resign. EFE.

With the European Union planning to do away with daylight saving time in 2019, we focused on the dilemma over whether to keep winter or summer time, while also turning our attention to uncertain times ahead for Catalan politics.
