n early August, the Open Arms rescue ship from a Catalan NGO picked up scores of migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea. Yet, denied a safe port, the ship then spent weeks waiting for somewhere to take the migrants. Eventually, health concerns on board led Italy to allow the crowded vessel to disembark in the port of Lampedusa. EFE. -
Singing sensation Rosalía made history by becoming the first Catalan artist to win two MTV awards. The singer from Sant Esteve Sesrovires won the ’Best Choreography’ and ’Best Latin’ prizes. Her star continued to rise in November, with five Latin Grammys, and two nominations for the main Grammys next year. EFE. -
The first lynx to be born in a hundred years in the Catalan Pyrenees was unveiled. The Eurasian lynx went extinct in the area a century ago, and this cub was born in May in the MónNatura Pirineus nature recovery centre. The cub does not yet have a name, but that job has been given to local schoolchildren. ACN. -
ow-cost airline Ryanair said it will close its base at Girona airport in January. The decision will affect 164 employees, who learnt about the planned closure in an email. The firm said it was closing the base due to a 41% drop in profits in the first quarter and because of a delay in taking possession of new Boeing aircraft EFE. -
In a short and simple ceremony on Barcelona’s La Rambla, family members of the victims of the terror attack in the city two years earlier paid tribute to their lost loved ones. The ceremony, organised by the city council and the Uavat victims of terrorism organisation, was held in silence except for the poignant notes of Pau Casals’ El cant dels ocells’. J. Losada.
