Jail terms for Catalan independence leaders unleash a wave of protest and unrest across the country, while late dictator Franco’s remains are finally exhumed

The jailing of independence leaders by Spain’s Supreme Court unleashed major protests around Catalonia. Among them were the Marches for Freedom, in which six columns of protesters left different points of the country to walk over 100km in three days to converge on Barcelona for a rally. 1 JOAN SABATER.
After years of legal wrangles, Spain’s acting Socialist government finally delivered on its pledge to remove the late dictator Francisco Franco’s remains from the Valley of the Fallen memorial site. Yet, the high-profile nature of the operation drew plenty of criticism in the media and across the political spectrum. 3 EFE.

The sentencing of the political leaders behind the 2017 referendum also set off days of disturbances in some of Catalonia’s main cities. Every night, hundreds of young protesters barricaded the streets and faced off against riot police, who even resorted to such hardline tactics as using rubber bullets and tear gas. MotoGP racer Marc Márquez made sports history again when he won his fourth consecutive MotoGP world title with four races to spare. It is the sixth in his career and his eighth motorbike world title in all. Still only 26, Cervera’s favourite son also became the youngest ever rider to achieve such a feat. 2 EFE 4 EFE.
