Staff

Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali –“the greatest” in his opinion and that of millions of others in the world– died on Friday aged 74. One of the best-known figures of the 20th century, Ali had suffered from Parkinson's syndrome for years. He was admitted to a Phoenix hospital with a respiratory complaint only to die a day later. A superb boxer, Ali was a showman who was outspoken on such issues as racism, war and religious intolerance.

Use of Spanish enforced 39 times in two months

Staff

Catalan NGO, the Plataforma per la llengua, warns that in April and May alone, the Spanish government approved 39 new cases of enforcing the use of Spanish. The cases enforced are part of eight legal rulings dealing with the obligatory use of Spanish in sporting licenses, packaging, signage and other areas of public information. The organisation that works in defence of the Catalan language said in a statement that “even though the Spanish government is only an acting-authority, the enforcement of Spanish has not stopped.”

The Plataforma also said that “since the beginning of the year, the Catalan government, which is not an acting- has not enforced a single ruling obliging the use of Catalan on companies or individuals.” Previously, the organisation warned that in March, the Spanish government enforced nine rulings on firms.
