Experts debate jelly fish in Barcelona
Jellyfish are fascinating creatures and the Catalan coast is a good place to observe them, according to experts from all over the world meeting in Barcelona for a conference on the invertebrates.
One mystery of jellyfish is how to predict their sudden proliferation. With no proven theories, it is believed it has to do with industry, pollution and overfishing, all characteristics of the Catalan coast. Environmental conditions also play a part, said Antonio Canepa yesterday, a participant at the 5th Internacional Symposium.
With predictions so difficult to make the Institut de Ciències del Mar has a 48-hour warning system: “Beyond that the predictions would not be realistic,” says researcher Verónica Fuentes.
