A centre of Modernism

Architect Antoni Gaudí's hometown of Reus has a museum devoted to the local genius and boasts a wealth of Modernist buildings designed by the likes of Domènech i Montaner

Pioneering pavilions

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was a prolific architect in Reus. Our first stop is the old psychiatric institution of Pere Mata, which is made up of a group of pavilions. The most notable pavilion is the Pavelló dels Distingits for its decoration and its stained-glass windows and mosaics.

The notary's house

Domènech i Montaner also designed a house for notary Pere Rull. The architect proposed luxurious Gothic windows and delicate handrails featuring floral designs. Yet, Casa Rull's most distinctive feature is the stone column that separates the house's two facades.

The textile shop

Perhaps Domènech i Montaner's most important work in Reus is Casa Navàs. The site's old textile shop has been conserved, along with the original stained-glass windows and murals. The stone facade, interior patio and terraces are decorated with reliefs inspired by nature.

4

The Casa Quadrada

Casa Serra was the first building in Reus with a lift. Also known as Casa Quadrada, it was designed by Joan Rubió, a follower of Antoni Gaudí. It features a stone facade of geometric patterns. Despite being Modernist, the structure's symmetry is in-line with 1920s noucentista trends.

A museum for a genius

The Gaudí Centre is a modern information centre dedicated to the illustrious Catlan architect, Antoni Gaudí.

Using audiovisual materials, texts and interactive modules, the centre traces the life and work of the locally-born architectural genius.

Reus

Reus is the city were the author of the Sagrada Familia, the globally-famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, was born. However, despite the predominance of Gaudí's talent and reputation in the city –including a museum– the historic centre has a number of Modernist gems designed by other architects of the time, such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Joan Rubió, whose works have survived to this day.
