Following in Pla's footsteps

A series of itineraries through the Baix Empordà area trace the life and work of one of Catalonia's most important 20th century writers and reveal a world of culture and landscape

Palafrugell

After visiting the Fundació Josep Pla, the itinerary continues to carrer Torres i Jonama, nº 56, where the Pla family moved to in 1904. Moving along carrer Estret, which gave its name to a novel published by Pla in 1951, go towards plaça Nova, where the Cercle Mercantil (former casino of the wealthy classes) and the Centre Fraternal are to be found.

2

Calella

The starting point for this section of the route is the local tourist office in the centre of Calella, while the destination is the Burricaires viewpoint. First go through Portbò to the Canadell beach, skirt the water along the Can Genís terrace and then take the coastal path as far as Marineda to eventually return to Calella de Palafrugell.

3

Pals

The walk begins at Pedró and passes by the Torre de les Hores, the church of Sant Pere, along the city wall to the Josep Pla viewpoint, from where Montgrí and the Medes islands can be seen. This is the spot where Pla brought guests to show them the best view of Empordà.

4

Sant Sebastià

This route shows the importance of the landscape to Pla. The first stop is the Joaquim Turró viewpoint, with views of Llafranc bay. The route continues towards the hermitage, passes by a 15th century watchtower and ends at the hermitage's terrace, which has views of the sea.

5

Tamariu

This route shows the writer's links with Tamariu. Here, the walk begins at the Liris beach as far as the Aigua Dolça cove after passing by Salí and Tamariu bay.

6

Llofriu

Pla links with Llofriu can be seen in his autobiographical and fictional writings, such as El campanaret. The Llofriu route goes along the Ramal and Puig Montoriol streets and through the Roma neighbourhood. After the waterway, go on to the plaça de l'Església de Sant Fruitós. The route ends in Barceloneta.

7

Ullastret

The Ullastret route includes the Sant Andreu hill, with its rich cultural and archaeological heritage. The popular writer Josep Pla took great interest in the early archaeological investigations of the site.

Josep Pla route

Designed by the foundation dedicated to the great writer's memory, the Fundació Josep Pla, the itinerary includes a number of different spots illustrated with texts from the Empordà author.

The route always begins at the foundation, the house in which the writer was born in Palafrugell and where there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the author.

Meanwhile, the cultural project Josep Pla, cuina i paisatge (Josep Pla, cuisine and landscape) offers the visitor the chance to try high-quality Empordà cuisine inspired by Pla's literary universe.
