French New Wave director Agnes Varda dies at 90

Filmmaker Agnes Varda died in Paris yesterday aged 90. Varda was a key name in the French New Wave in the 1960s, with films like Cleo from 5 to 7, Le Bonheur, and The Creatures. In 2017, she became the first woman director to win an honorary Oscar, and became the oldest ever nominee for an Oscar last year. She also became the first female director to receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Born in Belgium, Varda’s first film was La Pointe Courte, in 1955.
