First professor of Catalan language in Italy dies

Italian philologist, Giuseppe Tavani (Rome, 1924), who was the first professor of Catalan in Italy, has died. Tavani was awarded the Sant Jordi Cross in 1997 for his services to Catalan and for promoting the language among scholars in Italy. The philologist was also warded the Ramon Llull international prize in 2004, which is given for promoting Catalan abroad.
