POINT MADE
Speilberg vs Netflix
The Cannes Film Festival has been fighting online platforms like Netflix, Amazon and HBO, refusing to select their films, and put at their service the formidable promotion that its prizes and coverage generate. Roma is case in point: the Venice Film Festival accepted it, and it won the Golden Lion. A week ago, it took three Oscars. Cannes now has a powerful ally though: Steven Spielberg will propose to the Academy that, to compete for the Oscars, a film must first be released -with full honours- in theatres. If filmmakers prioritize streaming platforms, let them compete for an Emmy, the television awards, he says. The debate will be fierce, and positions will be taken. We’ve taken our position. Spielberg is right.
