Theresa May stakes unity of country on new Brexit plan

If Theresa May does not manage to get the European Union (EU) to make the necessary concessions on the Irish border for the anti-European rebels in her party and her Northern Irish partners in the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to vote in favour of her agreement to exit the EU next Tuesday, the consequences could be completely unpredictable and, in the worst case scenario, lead to the disintegration of the United Kingdom.

The British Prime Minister persevered with her plan on Monday, working closely with unionists and Euro-sceptics to exhaust the dialogue with Brussels, while maintaining a disorderly departure from the EU as the only alternative. This would have dire consequences for the country’s economy, as has been made clear by all sectors, but would allow her party to survive. There is the risk that the Conservative Party will break up if May makes more concessions to the pro-Europeans, who comprise a group within her party and the other British parties, with the exception of a Labour party faction.

The ’no-deal’ Brexit’ would also lead to a series of referendums that could end in anything from ’Brexit’ being revoked to the loss of Scotland and Northern Ireland if the UK were to go ahead and break from the EU without a pact in place.
