Gbagbo acquitted of crimes against humanity

The for­mer pres­i­dent of the Ivory Coast, Lau­rent Gbagbo, who stood ac­cused of crimes against hu­man­ity for the deaths of some 3,000 peo­ple in post-elec­tion protests, yes­ter­day be­came the first for­mer chief of state tried by the In­ter­na­tional Crim­i­nal Court ( TPI) to have his charges dis­missed. Gbagbo, 73, has spent seven years in prison in The Hague for the events that took place after the 2010 elec­tions, when he re­jected the vic­tory of the cur­rent pres­i­dent, Alas­sane Ouat­tara.
