US citizen arrested for spying in Moscow

On Monday the Russian Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of US citizen Paul Whelan in Moscow, allegedly while he was spying. The FSB stated that a case has been opened against Whelan and that investigations into this crime continue (in Russia conviction could mean a prison sentence of up to 20 years). In recent months, the FSB has complained about an increase in spying activity in Russian territory. The Kremlin had denounced numerous attempts to interfere in last March’s elections.
