Activist Liudmila Alekséieva, dead in Russia at 91

Rus­sia’s longest serv­ing and best known de­fender of human rights, So­viet ex-dis­si­dent, Li­ud­mila Alekséiva, died yes­ter­day, in Moscow, at age 91, ac­cord­ing to the Pres­i­den­tial Coun­cil of Rus­sia for Civil So­ci­ety and Human Rights. Re­cip­i­ent of many prizes, in­clud­ing the Eu­ro­pean Par­lia­ment’s Sakharov Prize for Free­dom of Thought, she was al­ways very crit­i­cal of Vladimir Putin.
