Dolors Sans

Master Craftsperson

Dolors Sans Osete was born in Vilafranca. She graduated in Fine Arts and since 1987 she has dedicated her professional life to the design and construction of dragons, giants, caps grossos (giant heads) and popular bestiary. She works out of her workshop in Pacs del Penedès, surrounded by vineyards, fruit trees and there is also a pond with goldfish. Dolors designs custom pieces, according to the needs of her clients' groups or organizations. Her sculptured figures are made of fibreglass (polyester resin).

Just last July Dolors received the Diploma of a Master Craftsperson awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya from the hands of President Carles Puigdemont,. The diploma is awarded to people who have made a profession of their craft and enterprise and who for over twenty years have dedicated their professional lives to their crafts with excellence. The jury highlighted her creativity and the innovative pieces that she produces.

Dolors invited us into her workshop so we could enjoy the magic of her world of fantasy.

1.The Lions head' the first piece we see which represents a fire-breathing dragon, The Chimaera was a hybrid monster in Greek mythology, child of Typhoeus and Echidna and sibling of Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra. It had the head and body of a lion, as well as the head of a goat that was attached to its back, and a tail that ended on a head of a snake.

And then the materials she works with:

2. Clay: used to model the sculpture.

3. Plaster, used to make the molds which will later be used for the clay sculpture.

4. Burlap: this will be covered with the clay.

5.Ladder. Indispensable! The giants and dragons are fairly big!

6. Saw disks: for cutting the metal and the fibreglass

7.Level: to create the correct equilibrium for navigation.

8. A giant's head: still in the clay process

9. Fibreglass: polyester resin that hardens to make the figures.

10. Paints: Everyone knows that dragons and giants are colourful creatures!

11. Gloves: a must when working with fibreglass

12. Scissors: to cut the fibreglass.

13. Wrench: The size of those dragons' feet!! Tough work to fashion.

14. Rubber mallet: - to separate the fibreglass from the mold.

15. Knives: to scrape and work the fibreglass.
