Where will the path of populism lead us?

If last year the political discourse was dominated by the word 'Brexit', it seems that this year 'populism' is the term du jour. This issue has a feature on the main players of the populist trend that is seemingly taking over the political arena (pages 20-29). Trump's victory alone shows it has to be taken seriously. However before that, Europe saw the victory of Brexit, the defeat of the Italian government by referendum and the rise of the far-right in Austria. The surge in populism is also an issue in Hungary, Poland and France, and threatens to become the hot political subject of 2017.

Also, don't miss our feature on the Cambridge University Boat Club's training camp in Banyoles to prepare for the Boat Race against Oxford. We talked to the men's and women's coaches about their experience here and training two of the most important rowing teams in the world. As always at this time of year, we offer a round-up of what's coming up in the arts and entertainment, and a taste of the anticipated cultural events in music, film, TV and books. And don't forget to check out our CATchat podcast on Soundcloud. Send us your comments and keep your feedback coming!
