Dolmens and vineyards in Alt Empordà
Experience the essence of this privileged region through its local natural products amid the purity of a landscape that boasts megalithic structures from thousands of years ago
This experience is strongly flavoured by the tenacious Empordà character, not to mention the purity of the surroundings. Writer Josep Pla said it all: “Empordà is, before anything else, a landscape.” It is a landscape that adds value to any activity you might do there, as well as leaving its mark on the local natural products.
The Can Torres winery, located in the Sant Climent Sescebes neighbourhood in the heart of Albera, has for generations preserved the virtues of the local environment. They offer a tourism for the senses based on the natural flavours of their organic wine and craft products. The production process uses only native yeasts, without sulfates, something reflected in the prize they were awarded for sustainable wine tourism.
Megalithic structures
The estate has 80 hectares of land, divided into vineyards, open fields and woods. It is a privileged environment, as well as a strategic site since prehistoric times, located as it is on an ancient route that links the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe. In fact, nearby there are megalithic structures going back 5,000 years, such as the Murtra menhir and the Gutina dolmens as well as those of Tires Llargues and Prat Tancat.
To get a real sense of the activities offered by the estate, it must be experienced firsthand. Thus, there are routes available for walkers and cyclists, allowing visitors to get to know the vineyards better, some of which were planted in the 1960s. There are simple, well-signposted paths that include descriptions of the grape varieties cultivated and that offer the chance to meet the local grapegrowers.
The visit ends at the Can Torres winery itself, where each of the estate's wines can be tasted or even a meal enjoyed in the open air. For the more daring, there is even the chance to learn a little about the Chinese yoga known as chi-kung at the site of the Murtra menhir. In all, the visit provides a range of sensory experiences through the aroma and taste of wine, contemplation of the beautiful landscape and interaction with the natural Albera surroundings.
