El Grec

Grec spotlights European creativity this summer

This year’s El Grec Festival aims to rouse audiences and get them back into theatres after two years of pandemic, whether it be open-air productions in the Teatre Grec or inside in the Teatre Lliure, on Montjuïc, or at any of the other twenty or so participating venues scattered throughout the city.

After five years in which the festival has focused on cultures around the world, this year the festival returns the spotlight to Europe. The programme of events includes performances from different European countries, such as the Nederlands Dans Theater who kicked off proceedings at the end of June, a German version of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People by Schaubühne Berlin, and one of the great figures of European theatre, Shakespeare, with a production of Hamlet directed by Peruvian Chela De Ferrari.

From Britain comes Next To Normal, an immersive musical at Barcelona’s Ideal digital arts centre during July, while Cuca Roseta headlines a night dedicated to Portuguese ’fado’ music on July 15. The imaginative universe of Italian film director Federico Fellini is in the spotlight on July 11 and 12, in 28 i mig, by Oriol Broggi’s company La Perla 29.
