Catalan taxi drivers visit Puigdemont
Alberto Álvarez, leader of the Elite union, which dominates the Barcelona taxi scene, is painfully aware that around half of his members are not happy with the agreement reached with the government, yesterday, which ended the taxi strike. He has made it very clear that should the promises made not follow through to realisation, he and his drivers will return to the street - and not for work. To make their willingness to take drastic action all the more evident, Álvarez was one of several taxi drivers who took their taxis to the Casa de la República in Waterloo, Belgium, the current residence of Carles Puigdemont, the exiled 130th President of Catalonia. From Puigdemont, the drivers received reassurance that the Generalitat would fulfill its promises, as well as a photo opportunity in a taxi. The four drivers who travelled to Belgium were allowed to vote by proxy, by strike organisers in Barcelona.
