Cardinal on trial for covering up child abuse

Car­di­nal Philippe Bar­barin ap­peared in court in Lyon yes­ter­day for cov­er­ing up child abuse com­mit­ted over 25 years ago by a priest he kept on in po­si­tions of au­thor­ity in var­i­ous parishes. Five other church of­fi­cials are also on trial. The Vat­i­can claimed diplo­matic im­mu­nity for Span­ish car­di­nal Luis Fran­cisco Ladaria who was ac­cused of com­plic­ity in the cover-up.
