Moncho, the Catalan king of Bolero, dies, 78

Ramon Calabuch Bastida, known as “Moncho”, Catalonia’s most famous Bolero performer, has died, aged 78, in Mataró. He dedicated his life to the musical genre, only retiring when doctors told him his vocal chords could no longer handle the strain, last year. He was known for his highly emotive performances, and said “Boleros are not just sung, they must be lived”. A tribute concert was already planned for the 14th of January, and is sold out. It will still go ahead, and is called “We are Moncho”.
