POINT MADE

Citizens and their discontents

Macri’s 2015 victory in Argentina marked the beginning of a Latin American slide to the right. The triumph of the ultra-rightwing Bolsonaro in Brazil has completed the flip of a region which was a leftist hegemony only a decade ago. In the last nine presidential elections, the winning candidates have come from the right, except López Obrador, who won in Mexico in July. Only Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua have remained rooted in the left, for now. Something was obviously really lacking from the leftwing leaders who generated so much hope. The move right is a sign of more or less generalized discontent with parties and politicians of all ideologies. When citizens vote – it’s change they are demanding.
